Society is aquiver with anticipation when word get out that Joel Beacham, the Duke of Swale, arguably the most eligible gentleman in England, is on the point of choosing a wife. Except the choice is not his to make. Past scandals and family honour require Joel to offer for Lady Mary Flynn.

Mary’s heart belongs to one of Joel’s closest friends, but Lady Flynn has refused permission for Richard Drayton to address her daughter, and Mary is too obedient to go against her mother’s wishes.
